The R-Pack is a paper-based thermal parcel protector for the e-commerce. The R-Pack is a recyclable paper-based product, which is not the case with amorphous XPS/EPS solutions. This concept was created for the Smurfit Kappa design challenge 2019.
Inside the R-Pack
The R-Pack is build up in two layers: a corrugated board (type b-flute) and a sheet of pressed cellulose. Cellulose is made from recycled paper fibers and has good insulation properties, making it a useful alternative for oil based non-recyclable EPS/XPS insulators. On paper, the R-Pack can be recycled again. However, the environmental impact of the R-Pack against other solutions can only be tested using a full LCA analysis.

Assembly steps
The R-Pack comes in a variety of different sizes with match sizing corrugated boxes. The sizes used are the most common sizes used in the industry. The R-Pack arrives flat, nested and compressed on a pallet to maximize efficiency during transport. After a few assembly steps, the R-Pack can be inserted in a matching size corrugated box. Subsequently, the thermal sensitive order is also inserted.

Validation by prototyping
Multiple prototypes were fabricated and tested against the insulation properties of - the widely used 20 mm EPS solutions, showing results were the overall insulation properties (r-value) matching or even better.
