The Onyx Core is an interactive system for soccer training. PreForm developed a soccer dome that helps players train their soccer skills such as agility, accuracy, and shooting velocity. The dome is equipped with 8 addressable LED targets that sense the force of the ball impact. The suspended tensioned 360-degree net provides direct reverberation, creating dynamic feedback similar to a soccer match. During this project, a fully functional prototype was build to show the potential of such a dome and was tested with multiple users.
The LED targets
The Onyx Core has eight LED targets attached to the frame. The target consist of a bright LED (1-3W), a piezo coaxial cable sensor for ball force detection and an optional radar sensor for measuring ball speeds. The combination of a targeted 'waterproofness' of IP55, the 1-3W LED and sunshade cover, making in possible to use the dome in bright daylight or in rainy weather. 
The control module
At the heart of the system is the control module. The interaction between user and dome begins here. With a gentle tap of the foot, the dome is activated. With different tap gestures the module can between different modes or programs. Additionally, the control module has integrated Bluetooth, making it possible to connect with the software application or connect with a headphone. The internal battery module makes it possible to use the dome wireless. Possibilities to create a more immersive user experience.
The frame and net
One tube shape is bended and double coated to create a sturdy and long lasting frame. The overall construction is designed to be quickly (dis)assembled. Optional is the internal wiring of the cables and extra fasteners to assemble the dome for a longer period of time. The net for ball reverberation is tensioned with the use of bungee cords and glass fiber poles. Furthermore, the dome is designed to be collomodular, making it possible to ship the product using existing e-commerce transport channels directly to the customer.
The software application
Connect the dome with the software application to gather insights into training progress, share personal results or to switch to different tailored training programs. The integrated sensors (the radar and piezo coaxial cable sensor) create data input to track all kinds user progression. Possibilities to enhance the user interaction.
Functional prototype building
The soccer training concept was elaborated in detail and multiple prototypes were developed. Eventually, a prototype with developed hard- and software was fully functional and was tested with user groups.
